Many of you knew Jim Holman, who played a big role in Ann Arbor tennis for about fifty years. Sadly, Jim died last year of metastatic melanoma. To celebrate Jim's life and love of tennis, a group of us at VTC are holding a tennis mixer and fundraiser to benefit the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center onSaturday, May 20, 2017, at the VTC. We have reserved the indoor courts from10 AM to 6 PMso that the event will be held rain or shine.
This is not a tournament, but rather a mixer, where you can meet other players and perhaps arrange a game later. Several pros at VTC are donating their time to run drills and quick games and contests, with the emphasis on fun. If you are unable to afford the suggested donation, you may pay what you can afford, and scholarships are available for school kids.
Additionally, we have arranged a very special on-court clinic for injury prevention and rehabilitation. From 3-5 PM, one court will be set aside for you to hit with Daryl Fisher, who has been playing and teaching at the VTC since 1997, and has earned the top level of certification from the US Professional Tennis Association. You can get advice from Daryl about how to avoid injury, then you can talk with Joseph Taylor, a physical therapist at the Detroit Medical Center at the Franklin Athletic Club, and a Certified Tennis Performance Specialist, about how to rehabilitate an injury. This fee for the clinic is included in your registration donation, or just attend the clinic and make the suggested donation.
The schedule follows: Suggested donation
Elementary Children 10-11 AM $10
Middle school 11-12 PM $10
High school 12-1:45 PM $20
Adults under 40 2:15-4 PM $40
Injury prevention and rehab clinic 3-5 PM (included with registration)
Adults over 40 4-6 PM $40
100 per cent of registration donations will go directly to fund melanoma research and we ask you to make your donation directly at this site: http://victors.us/jimholmanfundraiser. Of course, if you'd like to donate and you cannot attend, please click on the link and make your donation, in any amount. That said, there are expenses that must be covered, including court time. To sponsor a court for eight hours, a donation of $96 is required, and there are still six courts available. Please contact me directly.
We also need volunteers to assist the pros on court, greet and direct people when they arrive, and assist in set up and clean up. To volunteer, you may fill out the form at the VTC front desk, (preferred,) or contact me directly. We need your name, email, phone number, time available, whether or not you have experience teaching tennis, and if you can assist on court, off court, or both.
